Tobia Scarpa Soldiesis floor lamp

Monnalisa, Italy, 1990s

SOLD 12.24

This rare floor lamp has an evanescent presence. Created by spraying an internal metal structure with a cocoon resin – a kind of man-made vellum – it recalls the form and gossamer glow of a chrysalis. The Soldiesis is part of Tobia Scarpa’s taraxacum series, designed much earlier, which finds kinship in Achille and Pier Castiglioni’s pendant lamps of the same name.

Tobia Scarpa (b.1935) was born in Venice, Italy. He built a formidable partnership with his wife Afra Scarpa, née Bianchin, whom he met while studying architecture at the University luav di Venezia in the 1950s. Their distinctive oeuvre, produced over half a century, imbues generous forms with a fine Italian sensibility. Their work is displayed in the Louvre and New York’s MoMA.

The lamp is operated by a foot switch and is in excellent vintage condition. Recently rewired and PAT tested to UK standards.
