Originally designed for the Café Rothschild, the Von Vogelsang armchair by Philippe Starck playfully reduces the armchair to its most sparse form. Two clean curves of tubular steel enclose the sitter, supported by a subtly perforated seat, and four legs.
The piece is in fair condition; it features some surface wear and chipping, particularly on the left arm and the seat.
French architect and industrial designer Philippe Starck (b.1949) is widely credited with ushering in a new era of ‘democratic design’. His philosophy, shaped by an aeronautical engineer father, produced a protean cavalcade of interiors, furniture and home accessories that embraced functional elegance. Among his biggest hits are the Juicy Salif juicer for Alessi (1990) and the Ghost chair for Kartell (2002).
