Maurizio Peregalli’s Savonarola stool reworks the traditional X-frame seat in steel and black rubber. Designed for Zeus Design in 1984, it takes its name from the folding Savonarola chair, a form that has been used in European furniture since the Renaissance.
The crossed structure gives the stool its characteristic silhouette, while the rubber construction removes much of the formality associated with its historical predecessor. Peregalli’s use of an industrial material gives the familiar shape a distinctly contemporary reading.
Peregalli is the founder and creative force behind Zeus Design, the Italian furniture company established in Milan in 1984. The company became known for working with industrial materials and for furniture with a stripped-back, functional character.
