Success came swiftly for Mario Bellini’s voluptuous modular sofa. Designed in 1971, it was featured in a prescient exhibition titled ‘Italy and The New Domestic Landscape’ at the MoMA the following year.
First manufactured by C&B and later by B&B Italia, Bellini’s design hinges on hidden rings and carabiners that allow the sitter to create a desired configuration with discreet construction. The plump sectional elements hold their own as individual chairs, and the backrests can be removed to create a daybed or footstool.
Milanese architect Mario Bellini (b.1935) is one of our greatest living designers. His instinct for creating monumental pieces of design with distinctive architectural character has won him eight Compasso d’Oro awards and the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement by the Triennale di Milano. The invented ‘Camaleonda’ is a portmanteau of the Italian words ‘camaleonte’, meaning chameleon, and ‘onda’, or wave.
Newly reupholstered in a wool alpaca blend. Manufactured by C&B with the exception of the footstool that is manufactured by B&B Italia.
