Marcel Breuer Cut-Out Armchair

Characterised by its radically efficient use of sheet plywood, the Cut-Out Armchair by Marcel Breuer is an experimental design maximising the structural potential of plywood. Side panels simply cut from sheet material support a curved seat and backrest moulded from thin veneer.

Originally designed for Isokon but never produced, the impactful chair was reintroduced into the Isokon collection last year. This occasional chair comes in two iterations, with or without arms.

The piece is part of the Masur Edition by Isokon, a collection of four enduring designs by Marcel Breuer reimagined in rare masur birch veneer. Selected for its elusive, graphic character, masur birch introduces a psychedelic quality to Breuer’s modernist forms, creating a striking contrast with the clarity and restraint of the designs.

The chair is available in three masur configurations: 

Masur side panels — £1,900 + VAT

Masur seat & back — £1,900 + VAT

Full masur surfaces — £2,300 + VAT

All items are produced in small production runs. Bespoke masur application or sizes may be possible on request. Some items may be in stock at time of order. If an item is not in stock, a lead time of 10–12 weeks is standard.

Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) was a Hungarian-born designer and architect who studied and later taught at the Bauhaus. In 1935 he followed Walter Gropius to London and became Chief Designer at Isokon, where he developed pioneering designs in laminated and formed plywood, before moving to the USA in 1937 to teach architecture at Harvard.

Isokon is a furniture-making company specialising in plywood production. Its collection is characterised by minimalism, material efficiency and considered construction. All Isokon designs are carefully handmade in small-batch production at the company’s workshop in East London.
