Lino Sabattini La Giostra silver-plated dish

A silver-plated brass dish by pioneering Italian silversmith Lino Sabattini (1925-2016). Four polished silver spheres intersect the slim rim with a signature purity of form.

“I find that the workshop is often better than a school, because there is the possibility of doing and of learning, and sometimes of making mistakes,” said self-taught Sabattini. His elegant silver-plated objects caught the eye of Gio Ponti, who became his mentor and collaborator. He went on to lead the workshops of Christofle, and in 1964 opened his factory, where this plate was produced, in Bregano near Como. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The plate is stamped to the underside with a manufacturer’s mark and facsimile signature. There is some tarnishing to the surface.
