This upholstered Rio rosewood bergère and beechwood footstool were designed in the studio of designer Jules Leleu. Leleu (1883-1961) was intimately associated with the Art Deco style, exhibiting his work at the show that gave this modern style its name: the ‘Exposition des Arts Decoratifs’ of 1925. His later commissions included the interiors of several ocean liners, a dining room for the Elysée Palace, and the Grand Salon des Ambassadeurs at La Societé des Nations in Geneva. This armchair and footstool captures Art Deco’s exuberance and sleek profiles in a subtly restrained format. It comes reupholstered in a deep pile alpaca velvet.
