Gary Morga ‘Aphrodite’ floor lamp

UK 2011

£4,000

The Aphrodite is Gary Morga’s ‘goddess’ in a series of three lamps that represent figures in Greek mythology. Described by Morga as ‘symbolically significant’, its design reflects his rejection of the Jungian warrior archetype, and exploration of the goddess as the feminine component of the male psyche. It is a limited edition of one, designed in the 1980s and produced by Morga in 2013. The entirely handmade structure is made from metal and acrylic, with a glowing rounded base and a triangular tip illuminated by a red neon light. The lower light is manually turned on and off by pushing the base down.

Postmodern designer Gary Morga (b. 1956) was born in Edinburgh and studied Silversmithing and Metalwork at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London. In 1986 he was invited to submit designs for the Memphis Milano Lights Exhibition, where he exhibited the NASTRO lamp. It was to be the last exhibition of the Memphis Milano group.
