This distinctive bench in aluminium was designed exclusively for Béton Brut by Archive for Space. An exercise in imaginative modern metalwork, it is made from a single sheet of unsealed aluminium, which is gently folded and welded into two tubes to create a scroll-like volute. These also act as an anchor, facilitating a robust but still relatively lightweight construction. A slimline steel brace under the seat provides extra support.
The piece is part of a series in aluminium by Archive for Space entitled Alu. An organic design language challenges utilitarian connotation, while the selection of unsealed aluminium ensures a ‘living finish’ that will naturally patina over time. The collection, crafted from standard off-the-shelf sheets of aluminium, is handmade to order in 8-10 weeks.
Archive for Space is the design studio of Arabella Maza and Stephen Maginn, based in London and Mallorca. Untethered by rigid discipline, the studio works across architecture, interiors, installations, industrial and set design, as well as music and generative art. Each project is approached through their distinctive lens, which draws on an extensive archive of references and practices. The studio also leads a design unit at The University of Cardiff entitled Archiving Space. They first met while working at the late Sir Terence Conran’s architecture, interior design and product design studio, Conran and Partners.
