The Aggregato pendant lamp was designed by Enzo Mari for Artemide in 1974. Part of Mari’s wider Aggregato lighting system, the design was based on a series of simple geometric components that could be combined in different ways.
The pendant uses a compact, understated form with a focus on the relationship between its individual elements. Mari’s systemic approach to lighting was closely tied to the idea that good design should be clear in both its construction and use.
As Oliver Basciano wrote in his obituary in the Guardian in 2020, politics infused everything that Mari touched. An ardent communist, he hated the gallery. Seeing it as pornographic window dressing, he preferred to make pieces for mass production or eschew it altogether, offering his designs open source to the public to make themselves in his project ‘Autoprogettazione’.
The piece is in good condition. It has been rewired and PAT tested to UK standards.
