Furniture designer, architect, painter and writer Paul T Frankl (1886–1958) was born in Vienna and studied at the Berlin Polytechnic before settling in New York. An unlikely proponent of American modernism, his outsider’s perspective gave credence to the movement and soon bore his distinctive ‘skyscraper’ furniture style. He then moved to Los Angeles and found a fresh audience among the Hollywood elite, including clients Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Fred Astaire.
Produced for Johnson Furniture Company, Frankl’s strikingly modern Amoeba coffee table pairs a biomorphic natural waxed cork top with slanted mahogany legs. It was originally marketed as a cocktail table, perhaps reflecting its conspicuous evolution from a conventional coffee table. The table bears the manufacturer’s stamp on the underside.
In very good vintage condition.
