Frank Gehry, the ‘gratuitously eccentric’ architect behind the Guggenheim Bilbao gained attention in the 1970s with his ‘Easy Edges’ furniture series (1969-73), constructed in corrugated cardboard and fibreboard. It is possible Gehry’s interest in found and everyday materials, was inspired by a childhood making cities out of scrap wood-chippings with his Grandma and a short spell designing chairs for army soldiers. He made his Santa Monica home, a deconstructivist work of art, from plywood, corrugated metal and chain-link fence.
This dining table and chair set in corrugated pressed cardboard exemplifies Gehry’s life-long design principles. It is elementary but distinctive, proportionate and speaks a language of fun utilitarianism – yet it is also very strong and durable. In good condition, with some light scuffs consistent with age.
