Sergio Mazza was born in Milan in 1931. He studied architecture and eventually opened his practice in Milan with Giuliana Gramigna. The studio designed products for companies such as Saporiti, Poltrona Frau and Formica & Krupp. Mazza founded Artemide with Ernesto Gismondi in 1960 just after this floor lamp was designed and made. This very rare floor lamp produced by Mazza in 1958 was the inspiration behind the first Artemide piece produced entitled the Alfa lamp. This latter design was a slightly different table lamp version of this floor lamp. The lamp comes in complete original condition, with nickel plated brass stem, marble base and fluted glass lampshade. The original switch is still intact and it has been re-wired to UK standards.
