This is an excellent example of a naive hand carved shepherd’s coffer or trunk made in Transylvania in the 1700s. Constructed from hewn timbers naturally bleached to the colour of stone. The mesh pattern carved across its surfaces is meant to deter and entangle malign influence. A similar coffer was used by Belgium taste maker Axel Vervoordt within one of his interior projects. Ultimate wabi-sabi.
Weathered, open grain, bleached and showing all the hallmarks of age. In excellent condition and fully functional.
