Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) is one of Finland’s best known and collected mid-century designers. Tynell was a pioneer of European lighting design and a founder of the first lighting manufacturing company in Finland, Taito Oy. Tynell’s company collaborated with up and coming talent as well as more established names such a Alvar Aalto. Tynell’s own designs within the catalogue are much collected for their elegant brass forms, beautiful detailing and exquisite quality.
The model 9602 floor lamp is a well known design famous for its large Chinese hat style shade. This example is a rare 1st edition example identified by its splayed tripod legged base in solid brass. The stem of the lamp is neatly bound in a fine tan leather tape. The distinctive conical shade is fixed to the stem with a brass cone that follows the angle of the shade and screws in place. The light uses two bulbs each with their own pull switch detailed with a spherical pull. This lamp is in excellent condition for its age with some surface crackling to the internal elements. The brass elements have a pleasing patina to them. The shade is later. It bears a stamp/engraving to the inner metal. The lamp has been rewired and PAT tested for use within the UK.
