Maria Vlandi is a Greek fine art ceramic sculptor who has exhibited internationally. Vlandi primarily uses stoneware clay to create abstracted and monumental forms, presenting her own discourse on form and space. As much about voids as matter, Vlandi also experiments with mark-making and surface texture, inspired by the animistic Theology of Lucio Fontana, and Sumerian sculptors from 5,000 years ago.
This sculpture, entitled ‘Forme noire avec écritures’ – or black shape with writing – is an excellent example of Vlandi’s work, both on a technical and conceptual level. The form, slightly ambiguous, suggests a lidded vessel, when it is actually a solid piece pierced by a shaft of light. The black matte glaze is then lacerated with fine surface markings, some in gold and some without colour.
This piece is a one-off work that has been signed and dated underside. In excellent condition.
