Engraved signature. Lorenzo Burchiellaro (1933-2017) was an Italian designer and sculptor. His materials of choice were always often metals, gold, silver, aluminium, zinc and copper. His sculptural prowess follows through into his functional more functional objects and furniture serve as functional sculptures.
This elegant vessel (‘portovaso’ in Italian) has been skilfully cast from aluminium. As a result, it is weighty and on closer inspection has surfaces that are delicately patterned with striations formed during the casting process. These indentations feature across all its surfaces and give the vessel a beautifully subtle organic texture. Designed as a planter, the soft curvy silhouette resembles that of an elongated eggcup. The internal chamber shows signs of its intended use, as it is slightly stained and rusty in places. Nonetheless, the external façade remains in excellent original condition.
