Mortars are an ancient culinary tool, described as indispensable to the preparation of food and medicines in texts like the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, dating from 1550 BC, and the writings of the Roman poet Juvenal. This example is a beautifully weighted and proportioned gothic example with flared rim and rippled side decorations.
It comes in a good, aged condition with a wonderful archaic patination to its exterior surfaces and a silky smoothness to the interior. Following the time-honoured lore of mortar construction, this one is heavy and made of a strong material to withstand prolonged pounding.
