As an architect and designer, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) should be celebrated for bringing Scandinavian modernism to global prominence. His sensitivity to the natural world, organic forms and materials tempered the hardness of rationalism. Birch was a particularly favoured material. Aalto spent his upbringing among the birch forests of Kuortane, Finland and the wood’s character is enhanced with a characterful dusky patina in this Model 600 desk. It has a show-back for positioning in the centre of a room as well as against a wall and a pull-out writing tray for extra surface
It has been fully restored and re-lacquered, but evidence of some former scratches remain, and it lacks keys for the drawers.
