Superstudio were a group of Florence based architects linked to the ‘Radical Design’ movement of the 1960s. Superstudio worked across a broad range of media producing photographic collages, films, art, furniture, lighting and exhibitions. Their output was driven by the belief that humans should strive for simple living, in rebellion against an envisioned future of consumption for the sake of consumption.
The SOFO range for Poltronova is simple in form and construction. Made from one piece of Polyurethane foam that is upholstered and then mounted on a plastic tray. The shape is ergonomic and economic, cut from one block with little waste. They are versatile and easy to move as they are incredibly lightweight. Originally these chairs were upholstered in brightly coloured stripes. Here they are upholstered rich red boucle wool from Bute.
One plastic tray is missing a small corner, which is visible on close inspection. They otherwise are in excellent condition with the foam still remaining springy and supportive.
