A set of four vintage alpine rush and pine dining chairs. They are very much in the manner of the Dordogne chairs designed by Charlotte Perriand for Robert Sentou, but with slightly narrower backs and marginally thicker profiles.
The aesthetic of Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), a key figure of European modernism, shifted from metal to the use of wood, straw and cane after travels to Japan in the 1940s. She left Japan wanting to strengthen the relationship between humanity and nature within the home. This had widespread influence on furniture manufactured in France, Belgium and Switzerland in this period.
There is age-related surface wear to the wood and minor losses to the rush.
