There is something both ancient and modern about this pair of sandstone sculpture. The grimacing faces that leer from the rock could be fractured elements of an archaic column, or Romanesque architectural sculpture, or works of twentieth-century Expressionism. The carving seems more a result of natural erosion than chisel-work, creating a rugged, dissonant aesthetic.
