Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) was an innovative architect and designer who had a large influence on Italian design between the 1950s and 1970s. His designs were practical, well engineered andergonomic. His collaborations with German design Richard Sapper from 1957 saw his designs break into the mass market. The Sleep-o-matic sofa and bed was designed by Zanuso in 1954 for the manufacturer Arflex a new company that was an offshoot from Pirelli, the famous rubber manufacturer.
The shape of the sofa has a minimalist 1950’s look and feel with metal feet, upholstered base, sculpted back rest and removable seat cushions. It can be adjusted to bring the seat out further, transforming it into a single bed. It has been recently reupholstered in Dedar, in a white and red striped textile suitable for outdoors.
