This collection of charred wood vessels has been coaxed from an assortment of offcuts found in David Horan’s workshop. The dimensions of each piece of sapele, cherry and London plane are subject to a formula devised by the designer, which defines the proportions for the container. Variations in width, height and thickness organically emerge.
Joined with a partial mitre joint along the edges to produce an offset step, the lids have a routed detail that acts as a handle. Once joined the wood is charred and ebonised, ensuring a spirit of cohesion across the collection. A unique maker’s mark is stamped on the underside. Sculpture, objet or receptacle, each piece is an expression of honest construction.
