Castiglioni Taraxacum cocoon pendant SM

Flos, Italy c1960

SOLD 08/19

Taraxacum is a plant genus home to the dandelion, hinting at the inspiration behind the structural shapes used across the Taraxacum series, designed by brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1960. Its organic shape casts an ambient light throughout a room. The structure of the lamp is covered using a highly innovative manufacturing technique for the time, a sprayed plastic polymer applied over an enamelled metal framework. This was a reimagining of a process initially developed by the Italian military to create an elastics and resistant membrane that mimicked the appearance of vellum. The series was exhibited within the influential exhibition ‘Italy: The new domestic landscape’ at MOMA New York in 1972. This lamp is in good vintage condition, rewired for UK and PAT tested. The internal frame has rusting, which causes quite a pleasing darkening on the external curves. No holes or tears. Less discolouration than you normally find on old editions, a good ivory colour. Approx D25 H30cm. Flex L200cm Confirmed size pending. E113
