Carlo Scarpa Cornaro sofa

Gavina, Italy, 1973

SALE £12,000 from £15,500 No VAT

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was an architect who mastered materials, detail, and light. He is most famous for Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, the Olivetti showroom in Venice and the Brion Tomb in San Vito d’Altivole.

The Cornaro sofa embodies the intentions of its designer to combine Japanese minimalism with style and comfort, and to follow the beauty of organic forms. Its deep-cushioned seat is braced by a lacquered wood frame, making a stylish but very comfortable piece of furniture. Carlo Scarpa’s Ultrarazionale style is beautifully delivered in this design, bearing evidence of functionalism, but focused on style and emotion – the wooden surround is like a nest cocooning the soft material within. A return to traditional aesthetics is mirrored in the sofa’s title, the name of one of Venice’s historic patrician families.

Reupholstered in the last few years in greige mohair velvet. The wooden frame shows signs of wear consistent with age and use and has had joint reinforcement.
