Angelo Mangiarotti’s work as an architect and industrial designer was led by a belief that carefully respecting a material’s characteristics was imperative to developing a form. The weight of marble inspired him to create his Eros series of tables, that rely solely on gravity to bond the slabs of marble together without fixings – a masterstroke in minimalist philosophy and engineering.
This console is from his Incas series, a more brutalist evolution of Eros. A robust top made from grey-blue Pietra Serena sandstone sits atop sharp angular legs. Pietra Serena has a muted look and feel to it and was extensively used in Renaissance architecture across Italy. They slot perfectly, fixed by gravity and friction. It is in very good condition for its age with no chips or cracks. The surfaces show one or two very minor imperfections from use.
