This small chair from the Ivory Coast has a truly lovely presence. It is hand carved and showcases the typical design elements of a ‘Baoulé’ chair: low seat with a vertical back. Indeed, in Ivorian tribes wives or female relatives traditionally offered these to the men after initiation. The straight back’s austere rigidity thus symbolised the dignity of their newfound social position. The simplicity of its design makes for a charming and versatile piece. Although it shows signs of wear to the surfaces of the wood, it is in great structural condition.
