Afra & Tobia Scarpa Bastiano Sofa

The Bastiano series is one of the highly influential Italian design duos earliest furniture productions. The intention of the design was to provide “seating that was sophisticated and elegant, yet casual and comfortable”. The frame has a simple hardwood construction with the original leather seat and back pads. This compact and sculptural sofa works well in the middle of a room as so much consideration was given to the aesthetic of the back.

This is an early example and the dark green leather is undamaged yet well worn and faded in places which has resulted in a rich crocodile skin patina. All the pads have recently been restuffed and the leather reconditioned and fed. The frame is generally in very good condition with a noticeable area of scratching to the left arm rest and a few nicks to the finish at the back (please refer to images).
