Arne Norell was born in 1917 in Sweden. He opened his own workshop in Stockholm in 1954, starting Norell Möbel in Småland, four years later. Norell was known for his versatile use of quality natural materials – wood, leather, fabric – into furniture characterised by comfort. His aesthetic has an affinity with those of Danish designer Klaare Klint (1888-1954), who, a generation before him, brought time-honoured, vernacular forms into modernist expression. The Cromwell sofa fits that bill, updating the traditional Danish cabinet maker sofa into a new slimmer form with subtle curves at the back. Newly reupholstered in a naturally-dyed olive green leather from Scandinavia.
